E-Trade Web Interface Will Protect You From Hard to Borrow Short
Today, I wanted to experiment with shorting TICC. But when I submitted an order on the E-Trade web site, I got the following message:
"Your sell short order cannot be processed. This security is considered Hard to Borrow. You must complete the Hard to Borrow Trading Agreement prior to placing sell short orders for this security. Complete the Agreement now."
Before this experience, I was worried that I might short a stock that has difficulty moving. But looks like E-Trade will monitor it for you... as long as you didn't fill out the agreement.

I was playing around some more. But this time with the symbol 'X'. Instead of placing a limit order, I decided to place a market order. I got the following message:
"This security is considered Hard to Borrow. Only limit orders are accepted for sell short orders in this security."
