My son, Martin, is four. He had a birthday and we had the party in our house. More than 15 kids showed up with at least one parent. So we had 17 kids and 19 parents in the house. Crazy. We played games, ran around, watched a magic show, and ate a giant cake. As we started to clean the mess afterwards, nobody left and everybody helped. At one point, my son ran into the kitchen and said, “Mommy! Mommy! Some stranger is in the bedroom, effing Maya's mother.” Everybody froze. Did he really say “effing”? I looked at Martin with raised eyebrows. “What did you say?” “Kidding,” he said. “April Fools' Day!” There was a pause, then everybody burst out laughing. In the midst of it, Martin yelled, dead serious, “It isn't a stranger. It's Dad.”
