What Do I Do If My Child Swallowed A Desiccant Silica Gel?

First off, if your child has consumed a desiccant silica gel packet and is choking, perform C.P.R immediately; If your child is not at choking risk and has actually ingested the packet, then the first thing to do, is not to get frantic and ecstatic about what your child has done. Your first objective is not to get your curious child scared in any way. You do not want to raise their trauma level at all. Now that your focused and calm, the first objective is to find out where the silica gel came from. If the silica gel came from a plant seed pack, it could have been treated with an insecticide which would severely affect your child's oxygen and airway. Some insecticides contain "organophosphates" which are very similar to nerve agents (chemical weapons) and could lead to fatal asphyxia. In this case, call 911 immediately so a trained medic can come to you and assure your child's airway is clear the whole way to the hospital. Most cases, when children are brought to a doctor they have time to become unconscious on the way leaving time for the airway to constrict leaving no oxygen for the brain. Instead, stay calm, and call 911 immediately for further assistance.

On the other hand, if the silica gel pack was from food like: beef jerky, vitamins, dried nuts/fruits, or vitamin bottles; Don't worry. Though most of these silica gel packets say "toxic, harmful if swallowed by infant or pet"; they pose no threat. Most packet warnings are just for product liability as a choking hazard. Silica is nothing more than a nontoxic, moisture absorbing, sand that helps keep food products "shelf life". The only problem your child may complain of, is an upset stomach. Just relax, lay down, and if anything does happen out of the ordinary or your child has worse symptoms, then contact 911 immediately for further assistance. If you have any questions about a silica gel pack and/or consumption of; You may always call the National Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) for further assistance.
